My Personal Journey: 10 Donations and Counting

Today marks my 10th blood donation, and I wanted to share my personal experience of how it all started and why I continue to donate.

It all began somewhat randomly in 2022. I was simply walking past a blood donation drive and, without much thought, decided to walk in and donate. At that time, I didn’t pay much attention to the importance of blood donation, nor did I realize that every few seconds, someone somewhere needs blood on a global scaleThe need for blood remains universal and pressing in nearly every country. Blood donations are vital for trauma victims, surgeries, cancer treatments, and various medical conditions. This knowledge has stayed with me, motivating me to become a regular donor.

Women are encouraged to donate blood up to four times a year, while men can donate up to six times. Personally, I truly enjoy the experience and find it joyous, both emotionally and physically. Each time I donate, I feel an immediate surge of energy, similar to the boost one might get from a glutathione IV. Because I’m passionate about healthy living and longevity, donating blood has become one of my most important proactive health strategies. It’s a simple yet powerful way for me to take care of myself and give back to the community at the same time.

The Health Benefits of Blood Donation: Boosting Your Healthspan and Longevity

Here’s how donating blood can benefit your health:

  1. Reduction in Iron Overload (Hemochromatosis): Regular blood donation helps regulate iron levels in your blood, which reduces the risk of heart disease, liver cirrhosis, and diabetes caused by iron buildup.
Study: Zacharski et al., Journal of the American Medical Association (2000)

  2. Improved Cardiovascular Health: Blood donation reduces blood viscosity, which can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Study: Salonen et al., American Journal of Epidemiology (1998)

  3. Reduced Cancer Risk: By lowering iron levels, blood donation can decrease the risk of cancers linked to iron overload, such as liver, colon, and lung cancer.
Study: Zacharski et al., Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2007)

  4. Enhanced Blood Flow: Blood donation improves blood flow and reduces the risk of blood clots, promoting better circulatory health.
Study: Siu et al., Journal of the American College of Cardiology (2006)

  5. Stimulation of New Blood Cell Production: Blood donation triggers the production of fresh, healthy blood cells, enhancing vitality and overall well-being.
Study: Wolf & Wartenberg, Transfusion Medicine Reviews (2001)

  6. Lowered Risk of Metabolic Syndrome: Some studies suggest that blood donation may help reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, a condition linked to heart disease and diabetes.
    Study: Qatar Biobank (2017)

  7. Mini Health Check: Your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin will be checked, and your blood will also be tested for 13 infectious diseases.
  8. Psychological Benefits: The act of donating blood can reduce stress and improve mental well-being, further contributing to better physical health.
Study: Piliavin & Siegl, Health Psychology (2007)

Additionally, in Germany, the upper age limit for blood donation was lifted in 2023. Now, anyone—regardless of age—can donate as long as they pass the required medical evaluations. This change has allowed older adults to continue contributing to blood donation efforts while maintaining their own health through regular medical checkups.

Donating blood not only helps save lives but also contributes significantly to your own health and longevity. I hope this inspires you to consider donating blood as part of your own health routine!
